about

In April of 2020 a friend of mine pointed me towards Naviar Records' Haiku Music Challenge. As someone with a fondness, if not strictly academic appreciation for the form, I found it an interesting point of departure for song composition, so I gave it a shot. Plus, it was April of 2020 - I had some time on my hands.

Looking back at the tracks that resulted from this time, it strikes me how it stands out from other areas of my practice that I was developing. Namely, that these feel more like songs than some of my other projects and collaborations. All the while, I can hear threads of ideas I would build upon in later releases. Perhaps it was down to the source material, or taking the necessary time to flesh these pieces out rather than committing an idea to tape as soon as possible.

I ended up regularly participating in the project until around June of that year, with the output living on a Soundcloud profile and slowly ticking over listens. Now, in December 2022 Naviar Records have invited me to participate in a showcase at Cafe OTO in London, a somewhat completion of a symbolic circle that began in early 2020 sitting at a table in a hotel room in New York pushing buttons on a synthesiser to see what would happen.

This is a compilation of some of the music I made in that time. No additional tweaks have been made, other than to shuffle the order in a way that makes sense as a whole. I hope you enjoy it.
